On Friday March 14th, 2025, Kingston Community Credit Union CEO, Jon Dessau, presented Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson, and Ian Cholmondeley of Extend-A-Family Kingston with a $5,000 donation toward the Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF).
The Extend-A-Family Kingston (EAFK) project was selected as the focus of the Kingston Community Climate Action Fund for 2024/2025. Funding from the KCCAF will support the expansion and enhancement of EAFK's Growability Hydroponic Greenhouse.
EAFK’s sustainable hydroponic vertical farming greenhouses have the capacity to produce 10,000 heads of fresh produce annually. To put this into perspective, the traditional cultivation of 10,000 heads of lettuce generates approximately 6 metric tons of CO2e emissions. In comparison, hydroponic vertical farming systems are projected to reduce CO2e emissions by 50-60%, generating only 2 to 3 metric tons of CO2e emissions.
Extend-A-Family Kingston is aiming to raise $30,000 in funding to support this initiative. The fundraising campaign through the Kingston Community Climate Action Fund will conclude on March 31, 2025.

In December, with the support of our members, staff, and the community, we collected items to create Winter Care Kits for those in need. These kits are designed to assist marginalized individuals who may be facing hardships during the colder months.
The items included: Warm socks, gloves hats and scarves, hand and feet warmers and personal hygiene products.
Once the items were gathered, some amazing volunteers assembled the kits. Michelle and her sons Jackson and Brooklyn helped put together 75 Winter Care Kits! These kits were then donated to Trellis HIV & Community Care. The Award Gala celebrated the artwork and stories created by local youth, focusing on a green future.
Our CEO, Jon Dessau, was joined by two KCCU Directors to present awards to the winners in the art and writing categories. The first-place winners in each category received a $500 GIC from KCCU to support their post-secondary education. Congratulations to this year’s winners, as well as to all the youth who submitted their pieces to the festival!
